I would imagine that he felt he would be taken care of as an official of some kind. Probably felt that with his education/ experience he might be placed high up immediately. Maybe he felt he was owed more in life and he felt the North would see his real value and compensate accordingly. Who knows what he expected maybe they would give him a cushy job with a wife or something.
