I mean I don’t have a strong relationship with my dad. But he was never the close kind. We have a silent bond though. Not through words but through actions. I still love him because he did what he did. I learned electrical work. I learned concrete work. I learned to plumb. I learned to roof. I learned how to wrench on a car. He did everything that was needed to keep the house working. I hated it as a kid. Now I’m indebted to him.
He’s never been the huggy I love you type. But I can tell you how many times he’s said he’s proud of me, and how many times he’s asked if I’ve changed my car’s air filter or rotated my tires. Kids will learn how dad’s show love. It may not be logical. But you’ll know it when you hear or see it. Be it showing you how to tie a bowline knot, how to change your brake pads.
